My first congas were the original LP fiberglass drums from the early 1970's...when the Patato's first came out, I bought 3 of those & got rid of the originals.
Around 1980, I bought 3 Skin on Skin's ( & got rid of the Patato's )...eventually sold the SoS & picked up these white Patato's..AGAIN. Just got these MEINL's a few months ago & am still in the process of re-finishing them. The REMO Djembe I rarely use...the REMO Tubano's on the far left come in real handy for school concerts & gigs where I don't want to lug around anything bigger or heavier. The LP bongo's are from the early 1970's...I particularly like the "rounded" bearing edge...feels more comfortable on my hands....are they made like this anymore ? When I mounted the REMO Nuskyn tucked heads on these bongo's a few years back, I had to add an extra 3/4" onto the block of wood that holds the 2 drums together because the edges of the heads ended up too close.

Here's a close up of my '70's LP bongos with the wider block of wood in the middle....if you zoom in,you can see where I added the extra piece.

Yeeman,

Thanks...those are the same hoops that are found on the high-end DW Gon Bop Cali series.
Very hand friendly, excellent chroming with enough tensile strength to pursue even the highest
pitched tunings without fear of warping. Cosmetically , very eye appealing and lack the bulk of
the more common LP Comfort Curve rims. I am really glad they are available on the Tumbao
Pro series.

Thanks again.

Peace, Chas

Here are two LP Classics I bought from Dario that I refinished but was not happy. Recently My girlfriend picked a new color for them. I am now very happy with them.

Had to share this picture I stumbled across.
Ringo Starr in a smoking jacket playing what looks like a very early Valje.

That is cool. I hope he took his rings off before playing too much.

Here are a couple more I found:

Ringo played bongos also.

Even had a Beatles Brand Bongo.

A collector's item I'm sure...especially in that cardboard display box. :P

Musical quality doubtful.

My re-finished MEINL's.....

Postby yeeman » Thu Dec 31, 2009 4:33 pm

.....just put my congas back together last nite after 2 months. The only drag is that the REMO head ( Nuskyn Crimp Lock Symmetry ) on the
"conga" was a little small, & as a result, does not tension properly......the head dips a little coming in from the rim...
meaning, I'll be banging my hand on the raised edge more....ouch !! Actually, only 1 of the 3 REMO heads sat FLAT on the bearing edge.
It's basically, hit or miss when buying REMO heads for the Luis Conte model....that's a fact.

I had someone strip the finish & apply MINWAX Colonial Maple stain.
4.jpg
Several coats of stain & wipe-on poly were applied.
5.jpg
I added 3 coats of water-based semi-gloss poly.
6.jpg
The shell protectors hold on pretty solid.
7.jpg
...still room to use the tuning wrench.
