REMO heads for MEINL to sell.....

Postby yeeman » Fri Jan 01, 2010 8:37 pm

Tried the Remo Nuskyn " Crimplock Symmetry " on my Luis Conte Meinl's but wasn't happy how they fit on one drum.....it was OK, but not perfect. I'll just put the original skin heads back on for now.
According to REMO, these particular heads were designed for all the other MEINL models, but NOT specifically for the LC model.....they may fit fine on another set of LC's....just hit or miss.
They were only on for 2 days. I paid $150.00 for the 3, but will sell them for $100.00. Ahhh sheeeeet !!

yeeman,

Have you tried "even tuning"? I did for the Remo Fiberskyn Crimplock Symmetry heads I bought for my Gon Bops CA congas and it works. The Gon Bops online catalog states the following caveat: "Remo heads 1/4" undersize, requires even tuning to make the fit".

Good luck,

I always tune as evenly as I can, but that still didn't compensate for the "dip" in the head. Maybe it would have corrected itself after stretching for a while....maybe. From the information I received from REMO, the " original " Crimplock heads ( not the Symmetry series ) for the LC conga & tumba are actually one size bigger for those congas with the TTR rims from MEINL......I will follow up with that this week. Meanwhile, I'm starting to appreciate the sound of the skin heads now.....something I haven't really had in my house since the Fiberskin heads first came out ages ago.

Decided to keep my REMO heads......

Ahhh, forget it !!!! I had a long talk with REMO & was advised to stretch the hell outta these heads to make them work.
Besides, if I wanted SSR rims on my LC's, I would have to use these Crimplock Symmetry heads.......the "original" Crimplock heads only fit the TTR rims. So, there it is.....hmmmm, just beginning to appreciate the real skins too.

I'm so use to the REMO heads for many years, so I don't notice any ringing. I remember when the Fiberskyn 3's first came out 12 ? years ago or so....they reminded me of roto -toms ringing. As soon as the Evans came out, I tried those. When the Nuskyns came out, I switched to those.....the tucked heads....which are still on my LP fiberglass drums. When I almost gave up on the REMO heads for my Meinls & put the skin heads back on....it was OK...considering I haven't bothered with real skins in AGES !! But, there was still that mental block I have dealing with skins in humid weather. It was mainly the 11" drum that didn't sit right with the Crimplock Symmetry. I pounded on the head to try to stretch it, sat on it, jumped on it, kicked it, you name it. I finally stretched the HELL out of it by tightening it REAL high...& ended up injuring my left hand AGAIN by playing on it. I finally loosened up the head last week after many months. It sounds good enough for my purposes.
I guess my last desperate option would have been getting a hold of the "original" crimplock for the LC drums....but, I'll just live with these for now.
