The Martillo

Postby casaet » Sun Jan 24, 2010 5:08 pm

Having played the drumset and congas for quite a long time, I am now trying the bongos. There is an awful lot of stuff on youtube and the net, and most of it is just awful. So far I have managed to find exactly one really good video. With Dandy Rodriguez, of course. Problem is you cant see how he plays the martillo. His variations are fantastic, but how EXACTLY does he do the basic martillo? There is also a good instructional video on the martillo by Memo Acevedo, but it is not quite clear how he plays the 1 and the 3.
Now a demonstration on youtube by Dandy Rodriguez himself, would of course be nice, but he probably has other things to do. But any good information on the martillo would be a great help. It is about time that I decide which variation I am going to practice. It would probably be of use to a lot of others to, who are trying to learn to play the bongos.

C'mon now. There are loads of great bongo videos. Watch a few and try to see if you can tell the difference, which are good and which bad.

I have probably seen most of the bongo videos on the net, and those with Jimmy Delgado several times. I took another look, and saw something I had missed before. He basically uses the right hand on the macho same way I thought Memo Acevedo was doing. So the basic problem is solved. The problem with all instructional videos on the net, is that either people is playing crap, or things are going to fast. I am an insufferable perfectionist when it comes to good technique and good playing, and even if one is far from being perfect, one can always try to learn from the great masters of afro-american drumming. Thanks so much for fast and interesting answers.
