Bongo Cubano? Mahogany? Aged and well seasoned. Belonged to Chucky Lopez. Chucky was part of Eddie Palmieri's "Los Diablitos". Nicky Marrero (Timbales), Chucky Lopez (Bongos) and Eladio Perez (Tumbadoras). "17.1" anybody? :D

Ok no problem your set and Chucky borrowed it from time to time. Now do you know if Chucky used sticks on the bongo during the “Adoracion“ solo. Kind of sound like it. I listen almost everyday to Chucky’s Dad with EP’s La Perfecta. Talk about “sabor and masocate” on tumbadoras plus a very disciplined tumbador. RIP Tommy Lopez Sr.

PS: Later on this week or next when I get a chance I want to post some pictures of a 1970’s Walnut LP bongo I just bought this past weekend at a super good price in excellent shape with original heads. I just touched-up the finish last nite with some Watco oil and is looking good and I think I am going to mount new heads too.

I like lacquer too but this particular set I want it in oil. Most of the time I strip, fix any problems, sand and refinish but this set just needed the Watco oil to bring it back to life later I may put on some poly for extra proctection. The finish on this set it seems to me that originally it was some sort of satin oil finish. If I am going to mess with lacquer I like to do it outside when the weather is warmer. The solvents in lacquer are no joke. Later on this coming spring I may refinish another set on lacquer since I have some lacquer laying around. Lacquer is an excellent finish to buff and polished because is real hard. Car polish/wax is also good to use.

Little Johnny Signature Line? They must be fiberglass. Really nice looking, I like them. From the angle the picture was taken the shape seems to be different from the usual LP congas. Bongos look to be 7 ¼” and 9”. Looking at the bongo heads I can see they are mounted real high just like the Dandy’s. Last June I bought a set of Dandy’s, real nice bongos. The only thing was that the heads were mounted way too high specially the” hembra” and you hit the rim quite often and that hurts. I swapped out the heads and put Remo heads. The original heads on the Dandy work way better with a bongo with comfort curve rims, no problem hitting the rim.

I agree with Cuco 100%, hand control or technique is also key to volume and tone. You also need to develop your hand bone structure as do martial artist by striking hard object to make the bone denser as in knukles, shins and back of forearms. At least this is as I was taught. Another reason I personally mount skins higher is so that they last longer. I still practice on box bongos made for me in Puerto Rico heres a photo of them and another of a set like Cuco's with metal work by Cali mine are Cuban Caoba attributed to Vergara who didn't always make drums with hardware.

I like my bongo heads high too. Your bongo heads are not as high as Dandy's. The hembra head on the Dandy I have was mounted way too high I think the gap between the top of the head and the rim maybe an 1/8 of inch if that. No I left my Bruce Lee days behind almost 40 years ago my hands are real rugged and tough as it is, no iron hand training for me.

leedy2 wrote:Wood baby wood they are same as regular Giovanni congas just with a nice paint job made of north american Ash, The Bongos are same Johnny Rodriguez made of European Beech wood only thing different the the 2 strips put on JR's are not on this one otherwise the same bongos sizes are 7 1/4 and 9 same as JR .The heads are mounted high for a reason and that is Johnny and many bongos player play with a stiff hand or to say straight hand. Then you see many that play incorrectly with a curved hand when hand is curved you have a tendency to hit rim and yes that hurts .That is the reason they made comfort curve rims because player play improper and were hurting hand's.Remo is a good head but it makes a bad player look good and I tell you why, you hit a slap on a Remo head and it sounds very clear it is made with that intent . The center of a Remo head or any plastic head when you hold down it has no vibration sounds so the slap sound very loud and clear.Know on a regular real skin when you hit it vibration travels that why you have to hit harder and hand control is harder also. These are secrets of trade and I hate to tell them to people this is why thing's are happening, because as you have seen in past they know it all and after 60 years of in the business I have done it all,Many say I got a big ego but if you don't know, have ear training and study the elements of an instrument why talk about it. New comers don't want to lesson it's rumba, rumba, rumba y no saben del son columbia.0k we keep in touch with whats going on.

Wood OK. I have no problems with what you pointed out. I am just about to tune-up my bongos and practice. I got some sets with rawhides and others with Remos and I know you got to make adjusments. I have seen many pros including Dandy playing with Remos more and more. I even saw Manny Oquendo(RIP) with x-ray film on his macho and I do not think you had too many more old school than Manny Oquendo.
