Meinl Fiberglass Bongo

I'm not too frequent a bongo player.....wait, what? Movin' on......

I recently had one of my students leave a couple of sets of bongo that he was trying to unload, one was a set of LP Generation III, and the other set was a Meinl Fiberglass Blue Sparkle model. To be more exact it was the FFB400 Fiberglass Model.

I have to say this about that, I've never seen, nor played a Meinl product....much less one of their bongos. Another student of mine was interested in buying one of them, so we tuned them both up and he went at it. I was totally shocked at the comparison of both of these drums, the Meinl kicked LP's a**! It sounded so much clearer and louder, and to top it all off.....it wasn't as heavy as most fiberglass bongo are. I really dug the peewadden out of the Meinl fiberglass bongo.

What's been anyone else's experience with them...if any???????????

I used to have a Meinl Woodcraft Bongo. A very very nice drum, with a great sound.
I only sold it because the freeride system with the 9" hembra made the drum too wide for
me to hold comfortably. But I am not very tall. I've never played a fiberglass one though.

I have a great Meinl bongo, 30 years old, German oak, and, a new Woodcraft. Both outstanding bongos, and different from each other but as good any any others I have played. (No pics now - traveling.)

Great that you enjoyed playing Meinls. I own Meinls (freeride serie, also 400 amber brown, wood) and like them a lot. After i put djembes skin on macho - even better. Haven't played fiberglass yet, but i prosume that they are bright as a 12:00 PM sun .
Psych1, great for those 30 years old bongos, my teacher had an old Meinl marathon serie bongos with traditional rim and they were knock out.

Okay, so I wasn't off kilter when I was totally amazed with the sound and weight of the Meinl Fiberglass bongo....that''s great to know.
I'm not sure, but I'm thinking of buying myself a set of them. I really dug the sound and feel, they actually had some pretty nice heads on them too!

I've yet to hear from our brother, and extreme bongocero de la Isla del Encanto.........hermano caballoballo!

I have an Old set Of Meinl Bongo the first of the Free Ride system Bongo with the Patent Pending sticker, from 1998. I just replaced the macho's skin since the old one cracked. I think they are just fine the concept of shell integrity is good for shell cracking prevention but I don't really hear any improvement to tone. There may be better projection and volume but that could be due to the head size. The hardware on these is tradition, very good quality, the timber I belive is Mahogany. Comfortable to play wieght is fine, the only sugestion I would make to Meinl is to allow for seperation adjustmentto the center block. Could easly be made with a set adjusting screw to the top of block were the two retaining bolts come down. Heres a couple of photos with the new L&H skin.
