I agree - go get them. Date them later. Probably late 60's

Is that a fiberglass patch on the inside of the macho?
That could be removed.

I would definatley p/u them up I just restored a pair I will be posting a picture soon the sticker on it says Maywood Park NJ. According to what I have been told that is when drums were being made at Martin Cohens Hows before he moved to a ware house in Paliside Park NJ.

<<Moving to a modest house in Maywood, N.J. in 1963, the Cohens launched their cottage industry while Martin was still working as an engineer. "There were bongo shells drying all over the backyard all summer," Marilyn remembers. They risked it full-time starting in 1965 and, while raising two young children, plowed every available cent into the business. "I'd have a baby in one arm," says Marilyn, "and be taking orders over the phone with the other."

I had a pair that belonged to Juan Mendez, Pacheco's bongocero in "Viva Africa" album. Mendez was also the bongocero for the SAR All Stars and Roberto Torres. When M. Cohen came to WDNA, Miami many years ago, I took the bongo for him to see. He said it was one of the first batch of 10 he had made in Maywood, NJ. I had these bongos for over 30 years and tarded them to Julito from this forum.
Mendez told me that Cohen had taken to bongos to him in a grocery bag back in 1964, at a dance he was playing with Pacheco in Union City, NJ.
Here is a photo of them. Tag reads: LP Maywood, NJ., circa 63/64.

leedy2,

They actually look just like the ones Juancho posted. I will post the pics some time this weekend. I picked them up from some guy in FL who claims he was Santitos Colons neigbor in NY and that they were a gift from Santito when the guy was down and out. Story was never wanted to sale them because of sentimental value but they ended up collecting dust.

Saludos,

Neftali
