Excellent work on those LP bongos, they look really good.
I've got that same old LP bongo case too, I love it, so old school.

Nice bongo. It's interesting to see all the missing links. Most of the Maywood sets I've seen have styles like the ones Cuco & Dario posted. Martin must have gotten a new lath and tools just before making the PP move and changed the shell design. I've got one of the early PP sets that looks similar. Mine has the foil PP sticker on it but the original hembra kip skin had a Maywood stamp. So, there must have been some transition period.

Nice set. is the wood on that set Maple/Oak? It does not seem to be mahogany or walnut to me. I have a set with the same kind of wood but a fully transitioned PP with solid center block and metal stickers.

I always thought it was walnut but now that you ask I'm not so sure. It is not mahogany for sure, it is twice as thick and heavy as my mahogany LP. I probably wouldn't know maple if I saw it. It might be oak. I have another bongo that I believe is walnut and the grain on that one is different than this one.

I picked up the Bongo from a guy in his 70's in Florida the story is that he lived in New York and that they were given to him by his neighbor and friend Santitos Colon. He said he had them for a long time and never wanted to sale them because of sentimental value, but after a while he stopped playing and they started to collect dust. I picked them up and restored them not sure how much of the story is true???

Saludos :D

I would not doubt that story. I am pretty sure Santitos was a bongocero too besides being a pretty good singer. Your set could of have been played in the TP orchestra, Fania etc any of those bands that Santitos was a member from the mid 60's on. Ponte Duro Bongo!

If I am not mistaken Ray Barretto was a Jose Curbelo alumni.

PS: I forgot to add Frankie Ruiz to that list. There are some youtube videos were Frankie take some mean timbales solos.
