In the interest of science, I pulled the skin off of my Skin on Skin to examine the alma.
The alma is in there very tight, there are a few locations where you can see it biting into
the wood. I took the screws out and the alma stayed in place. I even pushed and pulled
onto the alma very firmly, and it went nowhere.

I did discover something cool though. My name written in white on the inside of the drum!

Geordie,
When you removed the skin, did you notice any grease/oil on the bearing edge?
Which one was it, segun ?

No I didn't notice anything like that on the bearing edge. This was the tres dos, you can see the number 12 written on several staves for a 12" tres dos.
The other drum is 13".

They are usually welded inside the drum after construction of the shell.....
