http://thounds.com/ is a place where you can post musical thoughts or compositions, and others can play over and mix with your composition.
I really like the idea of this, so I joined just to have some collaborative fun, and see how this cool little idea works.
After trying one recording, here's what I found out.
You will have to have an external mic that you can get interfaced with your computer. I would assume that most of us at congaplace have that.
The website interface defaults to your internal mic, so be sure to select USB mic (or whatever external mic your computer denotes) or you'll be sorry. I finally had a good enough take to save, and then on playback realized I had forgotten to change the default and it was a lousy recording.
You do need to put on the headphones like they say in the promo - this really gives you a much better handle on your mix.

Okay, I'll be recording a few things in there, and I figure we might have more fun if more people of the percussive nature descend on the site and start collaborating. Now it's mostly grunge rock and weird electric keyboard types. It's cost and spam free, so run by some decent folks.

Also, I'm "windhorsey" on skype if you want to add me for any other collaborative real-time chats.

Thanks, it just seems to me a worthy project for those of us non-professionals, sort of in the geeky realm, who want an exercise to practice different parts we know and see how well we sound, and who want to put some music together with others of similar musical passion.

On http://thounds.com
So far, I've put percussion to two other acoustic thounds. My first personal thound will be a bembe with "Sarago"

Another similar collaborative site. Same idea. Free. Have posted several mixes already. Fun. Easy.

Hey, I like what I see.. Just might have to move it to the kompoz website.. They have some cool options the thounds site doesn't have. Looks like a bit more robust of a system, and includes the capability of more offline collaboration. Thanks CongaTick!

Hey, if anyone is following this thread.. Scratch the whole Thounds thing and come over to Kompoz!
http://kompoz.com/member/Windhorse.

I've already started on a project with a guy in Israel. It's definitely fun.. You find out all about your tiniest timing problems, how best to apply solos, and recording and mixing nuances..
