L&H Mule skin results

Postby tigre77 » Sat Apr 03, 2010 7:31 pm

Hello everyone! I'm new to congas and musical instruments in general but I'm glad I found this site. The purpose of this post is to thank Michael for being available to answer a few questions and to document his mule skins on Ardiente and classic LP's.

They sound great man! I'd include a short audio clip of something but I find it sounds really bad. I don't know if its the laptop mic, if it's too far away from the drum or I need to practice but I hear it differently live than on the mic. But in short they sound as described on this forum in other posts, warmer, fuller, less ring, more robustness...all that. All I can say is that technique is what dominates, but there is nothing like learning on pleasant sounding skins as opposed to LP stock. Plus the whole skin replacement thing is akin to a soldier learning to dismantle his weapon...you need to bond with the drum and become one with it!

Specific to L&H though, he told me 4 hour soak which I did and it was pliable enough. In the picture the quinto (classic) & tumba (ardiente) skin come from the same mule. The conga is mule but seems to be from a different beast or different part of the body because it is very thick.

You did a good job obviously! 8)
Must have been a bit tricky mounting these skins
with the comfort curve rims if you are a first-time reskinner :)
Anyway, the result seems to be very fine.
Those L&H skins are really good.
Peace & drum

To mount skins , use my technique...it has been here for a while. Doesn't matter if the skin is too thick or if you want to remount over stretched heads. And thanks to Onile who did a step by step photo documentation. Its effortless and you can do it all by yourself. :D

Peace

Hello guys!

I'm a bit nervous now, cause i hope that everything will work out fine, my friend is in NYC and he'll meet with Michael to purchase three mule skins and let me tell you: I'm all over the place, happy and eager to receive skins and put them on and play man!!! Hardly wait! It's very good to read that you guys are satisfied with L&H P. skins.
I just wanted to share that with you!

Somewhat related--and with no intent on hijacking this thread--- I am selling my Ardiente quinto and conga headed with JCR mules. Here's my CL ad http://philadelphia.craigslist.org/msg/1919421214.html. These are gig-scarred vets with lots of mileage left. I just couldn't keep shlepping their wood weight so switched over to Matador fiberglass. PM if interested.

I hope you don't mind me butting into this conversation. I bought a skin from Mike last October for my Isla Conga. I can vouch for the quality - excellent. I am very happy, ten months later. This year, I picked up skins for my Bongos. Again, Mike sent me two quality skins. He knows his business.

Yihaaa!

I got my mules today. Friend was in NYC and met Mike who sell him 3 conga skins for my woodcrafts. I am very excited and can't wait to put skin for tumba in the water during the night sleep. I think I'll post some pics of my ''MulingTheWoodcrafts'' operation.

Thank you Michael very much for making your way and meeting Aljaz!!!
