Help/advice Toca/Meinl

Postby lfsa » Sat Jun 12, 2010 11:57 am

Hi,I am lfsa, new to the forum, but most impressed with what i have read(after all passing on the good word can only led to better words being shared in the future, and the future being better shared).
I was wondering if you could help me sort out a few things.I recently purchased two drums, one quinto and a conga. After veiwing thousands of images on line to identify them (was fairly certain they where toca traditionals) finally found the answer on this forum, via a post by Thebreeze(in an identify this drum earlier this year). They are early meinls. Will attach photos if i can.
My drums are all but identical to the tocas, the same rims, even the handle is exactly the same as the toca handle, the height 30"and their shape is as close as i have seen to a match, the head sizes are different so there is obviously going to be a slight difference in the proportional shape but they certainly have a very tapered shape to them. The only other difference is the side plate only have two bolt holes and Toca insist that they have always had four holes in their side plates.
Now being that the tocas and meinl were and are made in thailand ,as mine were and neither toca(KMC) or meinl(RolandMeinl) own their own facilities in Thailand, i propose that they do, as many woodworking machinery suppliers do and purchase from established factories ,and have it painted and badged with their colors and logos. In this case factories set up to produce congas.Does any one have any info on this?
The main point to this post (Yes I am getting to the point, just not as quickly as the spoken word)is that my heads have a 10" OD (outer diameter) , 9 1/4" ID (inner diameter) and the 11"OD has a 10 1/2"ID.To me the ID is what i would consider the playing surface.
Finally the questions.
Question 1;Can anyone tell me when Toca sell their 10 1/2",11 1/2" and 12 1/2" traditionals is that the ID or OD.Could a toca traditional owner measure it for me?
Question 2;Any ideas Pro's/cons ,if the sizes work to purchasing the 11 1/2" and 12 1/2" Tocas ,effectively giving me from requinto to tumba.
Question3;Can any toca owners give me some feed back on how they have handled the passage of time.
Any and all input would be greatly appreciate, cheers all.None of these are mine, but show the similarities.
