I have a very similar set, mine were made in Palisades Park and I think the tag in that pic looks like it says Palisades Park. They are not that heavy, and they are definitely not oak, contrary to what the ad says. With good skins, they can sound really good. I paid $69 new for mine, but that was in 1973 dollars, without mount or stand. $125 is better than $135 in the other ad. If you live near there, check them out in person to make sure none of the wood or glue joints are cracked, I just re-glued 3 glue joint separations in my macho. Tune them up to see how they sound and how the lugs feel when you tighten them. If you know anyone who plays bongos, bring them along if you can. Replacing skins or lugs is not hard, but fixing cracks is another level of skill and work. Let us know what you decide. And please don't paint them purple with naked dancers on them, have some respect! Just joking.

I have a set like that too. I always wonder about the wood. It does not seem to be mahogany, walnut or oak. Maple perhaps? The grain of this wood is rather plain not a lot of figure. I wonder if anybody here has an old LP catalog.

Everybody seems to thinnk that those are mahogany, i have a set just like them here, I paid 200 for mine, definitely worth 125, great sounding set of bongos, mine are extremely well made and have no separations. To get a set made like that today of some type of high quality wood ( mahogany, walnut , maple , NA oak) would cost about 400-450, not to mention the quality of aging of the wood.

Back on those days LP was making bongos out of high-end hardwoods Mahogany, Walnut, Zebrawood etc. I feel LP should come out with a limited edition retro mahogany, walnut or zebrawood bongo celebrating the bongo that put them on the map back in the day, the so called "Generation I".
