If the Congas are made of cheap wood or fiberglass, you can decorate it with what ever, but if they are made of exotic wood there is no need to do anything to them , the grain of the wood speaks for itself.

Hi All,

Right off the top, I'm 100% " To each, their own."
Personally, I'm a wood/ natural stains type of guy - that's just my taste.

One thing I noticed at a local arts fair recently was that kids are drawn to colorful drums, even if they sound, er, 'not so great.'
Case in point: My friend painted a beat up, kick-around djembe with some multi colored, bright acrylic paints for a festival we played. Totally tacky but fit the "carnival" type feel of the event.
We brought it to the arts fair untuned and sounding pretty ill, and mostly unplayed and even with hand made Dun Dun, handmade Cuban Bongos, Gon Bops, a nice old LP Tumba, a SageMan Djembe on site, probably 60% of the time, the younger kids were drawn to play that painted drum!
We taught the kids how to tune it and they had a ball, eventually playing many different drums, claves, shakers, etc. :D

Maybe that's a benefit of this colorful aspect of our beautiful world of Congas and Hand Percussion.

Its certainly not a trend- I've seen footage from the fifties that had painted, zebra print congas so its been around for a while.

Just like a playing style, a look is something that reflects personal expression, so if you dig your tubs, play them with pride.

Anyways, anything that brings kids to drums has a positive impact and is just another aspect of the drumming world.

To each ther own . i agree fully with .
But i think that if you want to be noticed as a percussion player make sure you REALLY PLAY WELL!!!!!!
All the other is rubbish ( My humble opinion though ! )
I love original wood drums with only clear varnish on them .

But for years i ve played on a Meinl bongo witch i got second hand and painted in a (dutch ) cowskin motiv.
White with black spots on it .

The reason ; After a verry nice studio recording we went to a Surinam/ Chinees restaurant in Amsterdam (warmoe straat )
I was ther first and i sat waiting outside, smoking ( yes that smoke ) .
My freinds came , we went in to the restaurant had a dinner .Than it dawned on me that i did not have my bongo bag with me .
STUPID me had left them outside . That time there were still many many junkie s in that street .
I ve checked everywhere but the were gone .
These where nice old Meinl bongo s .

Everytime i played gigs or rehearsels the cowskin motive reminded me of my stupidity

I came up with this design awhile back and was considering doing this with some new drums.
I'm glad I didn't with new but I have some old LPs I might have airbrushed this way.

I'm very interested in Taino history, so something along those lines that didn't look tacky would be cool.

For those who have not heard of them:
The Taino inhabited various islands in the Caribbean prior to Columbus' arrival, including Hispaniola and Puerto Rico. They were virtually wiped out by disease, slavery, and warfare with the europeans.

On a side note and by-the-way: If you have any authentic Taino related artifacts or anything you want to part with, PM me....it's a part of my history I love.

Hi all

I read this thread (missed a few things since it's quite large), and I actually do not understand either the design and painting stuff.

On a marketing point of view, customizing items reduce the amount of potential clients since it is not plain anymore.

I just hate most of the designs from Remo and Meinl on fiber drums. Why would they add ugly cheesy designs that just look like crap? Aren't designers drummers???

Now, having a painted or design drum is different if you personalize it yourself.

I think (but it is only my own taste) that it is absolutely fine to personalize your drums after you actually purchased them. It sometimes is a good way to refurbish old tubes too.

I always hated pre-customed items... If they are PRE customed, then they actually are NOT customed since they are mass produced.

Now, I am much more of a natural wood or plain colour fiber than a wolf-crying-under-the-moon type of guy.

I just received yesterday my new set and I love the look of natural wood.

Hi there

The bauer split about a month after I received them.... I mas so disappointed.

I just got them replaced by a set of 4 Roots (quinto, 2 congas and a tumba.

I am posting a pic of the whole line including also a super tumba (14") !

They look great. I haven't played them yet since the supplier mixed up the order and sent me two tumbas instead of thwo congas... and the quinto will arrive later.

I will play them on monday for a class I am giving and I'll let you guys know.

Roots seem to be quite unknown yet but everyone who plyed them were very satisfied... And they are still pretty cheap. I get 4 of them plus an extra 25€ gator soft case and basket stands for the price of 3 Bauers.
