Tigre,

On Youtube search for John Dandy Rodriguez on bongos and just study his martillo and contratiempos, he is definitely the "main man". Another great Youtube video is that of Jimmy Delgado on "martillo", I think is a two part video. Jimmy is one of the best timbalero in the business, he's also a great bongocero, having played with the likes of Eddie Palmieri. Finally check out Manny Oquendo with Conjunto Libre on Youtube, on some videos he plays bongo' instead of timbales, study those without a doubt. Manny was an inspiration on bongos to me and to many of today's top players. Dandy cites Manny as one of his major influences. Manny's playing is very tasty "y con tremendo afinque y mazacote".
You can't go wrong with those 3 recommendations, aside from that you got Miguel Cruz as a teacher. Miguel can hold his own with the 3 mentined. Miguel is got the sound of Mongo on quinto and of Yeyito on bongo'.

Cuidate,

Dario

Pakito Baeza has a number of quality instructional videos on youtube, some people don't like him too much but he plays well and has good technique.

Look for some of his other videos as well on Bongo.

I'm bumping this to address Leedy's post and to conclude this one on a better note, even if for me personally. It may seem as if I am pretending to know something about something but truly it is as literal as it is written. I do not presume or insinuate anything when I post my stuff. I assume it must be hard for the old school peeps on this forum to endure ignorant posts and I understand the emotion completely in a different context. Back in the day, no internet, word of mouth, real hard knocks to learn what is known now...I respect that sincerely. With the exception of certain assumptions from Leedy's post, I am that member he describes. I have no shame admitting that fact plus natural selection dictates standing in the shadows of more experienced percussionists in order to pay my dues. I am a hobbiest with little time equity in playing anything but I am serious about it to where I'm tapping my hands everywhere. No hard feelings whatsoever, I am left with no choice except to respond to Leedy's post because I fit the subject matter of his post with an indirect reference to this post based on an incorrect notion. It may be my writing skills need work in order to accurately convey my thoughts, I don't know.

I debated with myself whether or not to post another video to vindicate me for the horrid links I posted earlier but I did not want to do the straight martillo since it was dry the way I had it. Instead I will post below a guitar playing co-worker and myself improvising . Keep in mind I learned the martillo shortly after this post and I saw un video de un mojon sin pelo on fidelseyeglasses ripping it up on the bongo wwaaayyy better than me so no crea que yo me creo por que no es asi. Gracias.

Hey Tigre77, Keep it up man - you are doing good. Don't let any of this talk get you down. It can, and should, make you stronger, and better.
