My friend Mark Sanders has a wonderful bolg dealing with Cuban music. The information that "Markito" has compiled is outstanding. We should all be grateful for his contributions.

Many years ago Orestes Vilato' told me "if you want to learn proper martillo, afinque y sabrosura en el bongo', listen to Arsenio Rodriguez albums". Markito has compiled the work of two of the best bongoceros in history, "Papa Kila" with Arsenio and "Yeyito Iglesias" (in my opinion the best bogocero of all times) with Cachao and various other groups. Review these recordings with bongo' patterns and solos and learn from the best, hands down. These two are the source of inspiration for "Dandy", Orestes, Anthony Carrilo, Luis Conte, Michito, Papo Rodriguez, the best bongoceros today.

So far the favorite is Acordes de Bongo con "Chino" Incharte. But aside from bongos very rich playlist!

You know it is something that you bring up Orestes in this way with his response to you! Carlos "Patato" Valdes was asked a question by my brother Willie "Witi" Alvarez at a club in NYC with Tito Puente on hand Jose Madera and a few others. The question was who do think the best bongoceros are ? His reply with his favorite drink on hand A Heinekin was Orestes Vilato and Armando Peraza. Orestes because when he plays bongo he says something rythmically that always makes sense. Listen to his playing of bongo and you will see and hear that his repicando is the best. Armando Peraza was a hell of a bongo player with rythmic speed unlike any. I have listened to Orestes play bongo while doubling on timbal and at times only bongo. And I have to agree with Patato. I am a fan of many bongo players including all of the ones mentioned on this board. So great comment! ABout Orestes.

Respectable comment about Jose Mangual Sir because I admire him also. However Patato has loved and played with many bongoceros in his time. For Patato to be questioned in a comfortable atmosphere and have him answer Orestes and Armando. This does not take away any love or respect for his family like Mangual Sir because they are all family! It was simply a preference that he answered at a certain time in a club. I'm sure that we all have mentors and favorites which should not be pushed onto anyone for approval for we have many masters of the drum that hold there place in history! Too many in fact and there will be more holding there place for the contributions they have made in many genres. Que viva el Bongo! I have some pictures of our masters including Patato at the very moment I speak of except TP and Azuquita chose to pose with him. I can't find of a way to import some of these pics.
Perhaps someone will inform me.

Compatriot. I do not need a lesson on Patato, However Thank You! His legacy needs no comparison. Neither does Mangual Sir. I am 52 years old and have met and known many and with gods blessing will meet more. My involvement in the industry and with musicians is more than fly by night at a club. You would be surprised as to whom visits these forums with the names we choose to be a part of a community that is friendly and brotherly. I will not paste and copy or waste your time with history unless you ask for it. Many of us know some of the people and artists intimately that we speak of. Now in a friendly gesture I would appreciate it if you were aware of that element. I hope in time as we develop a community friendship that you will come to know whom I am slowly as I normally do with friendship. I appreciate your candor but will not debate it or challenge it. Thanks for responding your energy is appreciated.
