Sold any drums because of the recession?

Postby bongosnotbombs » Tue Aug 10, 2010 7:37 pm

With the recession affecting people all over the world with salary reductions, lay offs, reduced hours and generally poor economic conditions all around, I'm wondering how many of us have had to sell drums that normally would have been kept for much longer.

I try to resist the urge to sell my drums, for various reasons, and luckily I haven't had to sell any yet. But I've thought about it and surely would if it came down to it.

Wow I guess I’m not the only one. Two weeks ago I sold my Remo Tuff e Nuff congas and right now I am considering selling my Requena :( . Times are no doubt tough. I’m thinking e-bay on the Requena but I’m still deciding.

I am sorry about anyone suffering because of the economy - but for those doing OK it may be a good time to buy

Dayem, things sound like they are tough over there... Sad to hear. :( That really sucks if you have to sell your loved drums for financial reasons.

Couldnt be more the opposite here, things are booming all over the place, our economy is very strong and there are endless employment opportunities.
The company i work for has had their biggest year in their 90 year history, Ive had 2 salary increases in the last 12 months and decent end of financial year cash bonus also. All of it going towards my Cuba trip.
Heaps of gigs getting about too, it will pick up even more so going into the warmer months (currently winter here)

KING KONGA - That Requena has my name on it if you ever do decide to sell !!!

Sold my JCR on ebay and for what???? $$$ flew out the window !!!! had a dispute so I got them back...thank God!!! don't understand why I sold them in the first place. $$$ is tight but there are ways to save. Sometimes we just get desperate and the first thing we see we get rid off. I found out little things that I can do less spending and saving at the same time. Always thought I would need a celullar all the time but NO!!! don't need it. Sold my second car which I did not need...I take the bus and save....my 2 cents.
Cuquito....I see u r going craigslist.

Marcelo.....happy your doing good in that country.....God is good !!!

blessings!!

Ireland is in one of the worst recessions in years . together with the global economic meltdown the Irish government are incompetent fools who really fcuked things up
I have let some drums go but only to be replaced with others .I made a decision a few years ago that if want to buy some new stuff i have to sell some old stuff . Its working well as there only so many things i can play at once :) I sold an old pearl drumset set and replaced it with a lovely gretcsh kit ! Sold some old zildjan cymbals and got some dream cymbals ! Gonna pick up some lovely pearl elites congas in a couple of weeks , got a tip off from the guy in the store that there having a sale and there going for half price .. lovely . I have to restrain myself at times from buying stuff i really dont need . I thnik us drummers are the worst culprits for hoarding gear we dont need

ABAKUA I would love nothing more than to see you or someone else from this forum have my Requena, I know that the drum would be greatly appreciated. Believe me , the last thing I want to do is sell this historical relic none the less hard times call for hard decisions. I’m still in the deciding stages but if I do decide to sell you’ll be the first to know about it.

I think I've bought more because of the recession, I'm primarily a drumset player, and currently there are some deals that I just coupldn't turn down! Having said that therre are times when I get a bit overstocked and end up selling things just to keep things balanced around here.

IT'S KIND OF ODD BUT TRUE. EVEN THOUGH WE MUST DO, WHAT WE MUST AT THE END OF THE DAY. ON AN AVERAGE, MOST WILL SELL WHAT WILL SURELY SELL QUICKLY, FOR THE MOST CASH BECAUSE, THEY FEEL THEY HAVE TO, IN ORDER TO SAVE THEMSELVES FINANCIALLY. IN A FEW CASES IT MAY BE THE WISE THING TO DO. BUT IN MOST, ONE WOULD SELL SOMETHING VERY SPECIAL FOR SOME CASH. AND AS SOON AS THE CASH DISAPPEARS, ONE QUICKLY REALIZES THAT IT WAS ALL FOR NOTHING. (NO CASH/NO DRUM).

IF I TRULY HAD TO, I WOULD SELL MY DRUMS. BUT A BROTHER OF OUR'S HERE IN THIS FORUM (BONGOSNOTBOMBS), SHARED THIS VIEW WITH ME; AND SO, I TOOK IT TO HEART. SO, UNLESS I HAD TO REALLY DO IT. MY DRUMS, AIN'T GOING NOWHERE...

It's true, money comes and goes, but sometimes it is really needed. Myself, I have 3 sets of drums and also 3 bongos, each gets used and has a purposes, but I don't really need so many. When I think of selling some, I think of what would be most easily replaced again. Take the Requena for example, I would sell almost any other drum before that one if it was mine. Requena isn't building anymore of those, whereas Jay would gladly build another SOS.
