I.D conga

Postby rafitoconga » Tue Aug 17, 2010 4:33 am

Hi everyone. I'm brand new to this forum, and I'm hoping someone can help me I.D this conga that was given to me. I've attached some photos to help. It was in a garage and had to be cleaned up a little bit. The staves are not all the same thickness and it is a darker wood. The side plates seem to be some kind of die cast metal. I tried to tune it and one brke, and another chipped. Any help would be great. Thank you.

IS there anyway you could attach a larger pic or one which can be amplified once you click on it as per regular attachement?

Not clear enough, but it kind of looks like an early mexican type unless Im mistaken. I doubt its sonoc, the sideplates, band width and rim hoops are not typical of sonoc.

Thank you Abakua, and leedy2 for your help. I've added some bigger pics to help i.d the drum. Another question though, I qould really like to play it but the skin is ripped. The head is 9 inch., and I'm wondering what kind skin to put on it to produce the best sound. I was thinking of recycling a bison head that I have from one of my toca traditionals, but I've been reading a lot about mule, and cow hide. And ,is it a good idea to even play or just keep it around as a novelty. thank you

It looks like Pancho Villa's quinto! Mexican without a doubt. No offense or fun intended, but it's not a quality vintage conga, like the ones previously posted by deerskins. I'll just leave it as is. My honest opinion. Orale carnal!

If you can lay your hands on some hardware and re-skin it it might be more than a decoration. I have old mexican requinto that someone changed the hardware on (some old LP stuff) and I love the sound of that drum. If I'm not mistaken Zim Gar's were pretty good.
