ID my conga

Postby GuruPimpi » Thu Aug 26, 2010 7:39 pm

Hello guys!

I posted years ago picture of my cuban tumba. Only response I got then was from Johnny Conga. Lately I see that a lot of you guys know a lot about identifying congas (like Leedy2; a true colectioner and CongaDetective par excellence ;) )
So, this is my tumba, she's one helowa 'singer'.
ID her plz!

Thank you a lot!

Is a Cuban SONOC, probalbly from the late 1970's. Increbible sounding conga. At one point I had 5 of them, but they split on me as the Cuban glue is very inferior. They are great sounding congas, made of Cuban coaba. Caoba has been on the endangered species and SONOC stopped using Caoba in the mid 80's. You have a real gem in your hands. Here is a photo of the 5 I had. Wish I still had them.

Omelenko!

Thank you very much. She was split when I got it, but the teacher who sold me and my friend (we were both his pupils) helped us to repair the congas. I'm trying to get that girlfriend who then bought her sister conga, to sell her to me, to have a pair, but i haven't got her in touch lately. And yes, it's a great sounding tumba with mule skin.
I see you had them brown too. What do you think if i brush them and recolour them? Hardware is bad, I already changed the lugs and nuts with Meinls, cause old lugs were worned out and nuts were car parts :) Oh, I checked your pic closer and I see wood grains, mine is dark braown, can't see the grains...

I also miss the top steel ring, was wondering to put on new?

Omelenko, thank you!
If you would know anyone selling SONOC, pls pm me!

Groove on and take care!

KingKonga!

Thank you! The second picture of pair is like the pair when I saw it first... Mine is still a bit rough, mainly cause I'm a bit scared of refurbishing, but I think I'm getting there. Puting on some chrome on rust, polishing and way we go! ;)

Omelenko and kingkonga, do you have any close ups of sonocs, to see what kind of metal and nails were used around hoops and frame?

My friend has this SONOC, I was going to buy it, but now is not the time. It needs a lot of work.

Nice!

How much is he asking for her? Is it conga or quinto? What would be the price mine for example?
Thank you for reply!
