I also saw the PBS tribute to Cachao. Great show. I think the perfect example of how modest he was is when the story is told of when he was playing for an award show and Ricky Martin & Santana and their people where debating on how to play Oye Como Va should be played, when in fact Cachao was the original composer! Deja los muchacos! Boys will be boys.

Sorry but Cachao (RIP) is not the composer. The Composer is Tito Puente (RIP). Do not go around spreading non-factual information.

Hoping to avoid igniting a Cuban/Puerto Rican flame war because this is such an old, played out controversy, but the hook of Oye Como Va is so similar to Cachao's Chanchullo (recorded many years earlier than TP's Oye Como Va) that many give credit to Cachao for writing Oye Como Va. As far as I know, Cachao never publicly claimed credit for writing Oye Como Va and TP never publicly gave credit to Cachao for writing it, although there is no doubt TP must have heard Chanchullo before he recorded Oye Como Va. Here is a somewhat Cuban-biased description of this very old, tired controversy.

Although the link to reference 3 in Wikipedia doesn't work, the article quotes Puerto Rican salsa expert Max Salazar (RIP) as saying "Cachao's tumbaos for his 1937 composition of Resa Del Neleton (later changed to Chanchullo) inspired Tito Puente's signature tune 'Oye Como Va'."[3] I am willing to leave it at that, this is an opinion controversy that will likely never be definitively settled with objective evidence. Listen to them both and decide yourself. Please let's not get emotional over this.

In my case this does not have anything to do with Ricans and Cubans. The composer of "Oye Como Va" is Tito Puente not "Cachao" like Medina claimed. If TP was inspired by "Chanchullo" or not that is another subject. I would not credit a Rican as composer for "A Bailar Mi Bomba", Arsenio Rodriguez is the composer and obviously he was inspired by a Rican Bomba. I will not go around claiming that Arsenio lifted "A Bailar Mi Bomba" from Ricans, that's a Bomba that a Cuban Arsenio Rodriguez, composed.

Not trying to misinform anyone, just stating what the film stated. I only watched it once, but I don't think he ever claimed himself that he was the originator of Oye Como Va, but the program made it very clear that they did as do many others. Again this speaks to the main point of my comment, his humbleness. This is not to say they are right but to say that i am going around spreading mis-information is ignorant.

TP wrote and published Oye como va...punto final and that is a matter of record....now what are u gonna do,blame all the Latin piano players for stealing a montuno or some guajeo?.....hey i can take the tune Mambo Diablo by TP on the Vibes and invert the notes and create another tune from it...but I cant copy the first 8 bars of any tune and that is THE LAW!...guys please do ur homework/research into what the laws are about licensing and publishing...If it's one thing WE are not, and that is the most schooled individuals when it come to the 'business of music'...Cachao wasn't interested in royalties or licensing...he was interested in making music...and that is how it started....just making the music...and of course nobody starts out going into this profession for the money....though for some of us it does become a way of living and life...Cachao was walking Humility who loved music and shared it with the world....RIP Maestro!....JC Johnny Conga.....ps It's NOT about being Cuban or Puerto Rican, paleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeese!...

Thanks for the PBS link above! Good stuff! I enjoyed the narration by John Santos. You gotta love the way he breaks it down,, and Gallaraga's singing! Both of those guys are prominent figures at the Humboldt gathering each year!
