I haven't actually recorded with Audacity but I have found it real convenient to make already recorded material into short clips for demos. It's also fun to turn anything into ring tones if your phone can use MP3 for ringtones. My main ringtone is rumba clave that I actually recorded on my phone. It's kind of fun when every once in a while someone hears it and actually knows what it is.

hahah! That's really cool! I've heard sophisticated Salsa stuff, and all manner of ridiculous fanfare,, but that's genius to just have a simple clave.. You could be playing in a rumba and your phone rings.. Then, what if it plays right in time?? Does anyone hear it?

Hey that is awesome! I don't know if my phone allows mp3 to be used for ringtones, but it would be kinda fun to set a little conga beat as mine :D

The clave ring tone didn't even take anything outside the phone. I just used the built in recording feature. I tried to do 6/8 bell the same way but couldn't get anything that sounded even barely acceptable. If you do it that way, it helps to have someone else hit the record button and time it right so that there's no dead air.

I keep promising myself to do one with a classic rumba intro break ripped from CD and cut to length with Audacity.

Well Audacity works great for any kind of cutting, mixing, and of course recording. I wish I had a way to share some of my recordings with u (though none of them are really worth hanging on to lol) so u could see what I mean. With my percussion and keyboard I do whole songs on Audacity. I'm sure u could do a great intro with it.
