I was born in "El Cerro", considered a rumbero neighborhood. My dad was born in Spain (Gallego), I was the only white kid attending rumbas in "Parque Tulipan" in the late 50's early 60's. My father could not stand how "black" my soul was, eventhough a was a "blanquito". SONOC percussion fabric, where they make congas, bongos and batas is in "El Cerro" (Clazada Del Cerro) is formally named "Fernando Ortiz" Fabrica De Instrumentos. I know you're going to stop by there, if you could please stop by "Parque Tulipan" in (Calle Tulipan y Falgueras) and take a few photos of the park and of across the street, "El Solar La Korea", where all these rumbas originated, I will be forever greatfull. I haven't been in the roots, "la semilla", in 48 years. Maybe you can catch a rumba "en el parque" when you stop by. I wish you the best of times in my country of birth.

When I was in Cuba I was mainly in the Cerro / Ataré neighbourhood . I studied in that place for 2 months 5 days a week. I have a few photos of the area and people. Maybe you'd be interested to see. I had quite a time in that neighborhood..
p.s. I wonder if you knew Mario 'Chavalonga' Dreke (R.I.P.) from the area?

Please post photos of "El Cerro", I left when I was 10 and I just turned 59, haven't been there in 49 yrs. As a kid there were rumbas every night in Parque Tulipan. El Cerro, rumbero neighborhood.

Yep.. I wonder about the origin of the Mridangam. The obvious similarity in its double headed design and the bata. Makes me wonder if it's just coincidence, and the likelihood of putting skin on two sides of a log,, or if it is derived from Africa. Definitely amazing stuff these guys who play ragas..
