LP Originals

Postby torpedo tom » Sun Apr 24, 2011 6:13 am

Is anyone playing LP Originals or Salsas? 28" tall and larger openings on the bottoms. Salsas are wood and Originals are fiberglass. How do they sound compared to others? Good, bad, or think of something else?

Hi Torpedo,

I use my electric blue fibreglass Originals for amplified (read noisy) gigs, and have put a fibreskyn (keeps tuning) on the quinto and mule on the conga, which gives me something to tune the mule against. They are loud and lack some of the warmth of wood, but have a very decent tone. I also have Classics and even though you are not exactly comparing like for like ie FG and wood, mule and fibreskn, cannot hear too much difference in tone that the extra 2 inches might give you, even when I play them mixed. The difference in height means that the bottom opening is bigger on the Originals and they are a bit lower when seated which makes them more stable on the ground, but raising them off the ground by two inches using low stands or blocks does give them more volume and less 'choking' that you get with drums on the floor.
I love my gf Originals and have bossed, bullied and abused them for many years, even dropped one of them off a drum podium, and they still play beautifully.

BTW if anyone has a fibreglass original Tumba, preferably electric blue, I would be interested to make up the set.

I have a set that I'm selling, blue sparkle original, Palisades Park, early 70's. Best sounding congas and the most durable.

Torpedo Tom,

Here are my original Lp Palisades Park, New Jersey Congas. The yellow Quinto and Conga are a true pair (purchased together and never separated). I am the second owner. The gentleman I acquired these from bought them in 1973. They needed a lot of TLC. They had a lot of rust, condensation and dirt. My Tumbadora is my baby! I've had it for about 9 years. It was a true pair when I first acquired it from a good friend. At the time, I was touring with a band. After a 9/11 commemorative concert we performed in Texas, our trailer and bus was stolen. We lost everything including my Quinto (pair to my Tumba)! We were close to the Mexico border and even the cops told us that most likely our belongings were long gone over the border. Fortunately, the Tumbadoras hardware was in bad shape at the time and I had left it back home in Cleveland, Ohio. As for the look, I don't think I'll re-finish any of these (at least for now), I like the used look! I think it gives the drum a story (history) and character. ---I currently use plastic heads because the change in temperature and humidity here in Cleveland, Ohio is unpredictable (not even the meteorologist get it right). I would tune a real skin before a song and before we reach the second chorus, it would be de-tuned. The congas are loud with a brighter sound and don't weigh as much as wood, furthermore, they don't weigh as much as today's fiberglass.

Thank you Sielbo for the pics. Which heads are you using on the yellow drums, and do you like them? Thanks

Torpedo Tom,

I am currently using Remo FiberSkyn®3 on all three congas. I had purchased an 11 3/4 Fiberskyn®3 years ago but never used it, and so I placed it on the 11 3/4 conga after all the TLC. When I ordered the same FiberSkyn®3 for my Quinto and Tumbadora from Guitar Center, I waited a whole month (sucks!). When I finally picked them up and opened the box the heads had a different look. At first I thought that my guy had ordered the wrong heads but when I called Remo personally they said that the old FiberSkyn®3 with the brown edge was discontinued as of February of 2010. So far, I really like these heads. The tone is (to my ear) a little warmer than NuSkyn. My buddy has NuSkyn on his Skin on Skin congas and for me the head needs a tad more body, plus when I play them, they feel like a drum tom. They are plastic with no coating unlike FiberSkyn®3 which actually has a coating in top of the plastic. It feels more like a real skin head. I hope I didn't loose you with my explanation!

By the way, my Tumbadora in these photos still has an Lp head. I replaced it with a FiberSkyn®3. I'll post an updated photo as soon as I can.

Leedy2,

I would love to see your 1965 Lp congas!!! Can you please post some photos?

Thanks guys!

Here are my Vintage LP Palisades Park Congas. Very light weight and sound great. They are in mint condition. I enjoy them. Photo was taken with flash, this is how they look under stage lighting.

Leedy2,

Paper tags? Can you expand on this a little? How did they look like? how big were they? Were they glued on the exterior or interior? The reason I ask is because my Tumbadora never had an Lp tag (including the Quinto pair to it which was stolen in the middle of a tour). I'm trying to find pictures of the pair when my buddy first purchased them. This is the first time I have ever heard of paper Lp tags!

Mike had these at the Chicago drum show a few years back and I saw them. They looked and I'm sure they still look like he just bought them. Rocky, A.K.A. Torpedo Tom
