Pan Con Queso : Bongolandia

Postby congabluedog » Wed Jul 27, 2011 12:48 am

I thought about posting these pics for awhile, but just decided to now. These drums are really special.... truly awesome, and they sound amazing. The man I bought these bongos from either bought it from Iván Cáceres or bought it from Iván , and it was one of Ivan's bongos. I don't remember. I think I will call the guy and find out for sure. Anyway, enjoy the pics. I would like to hear stories about Ivan and Bongolandia if people have them. From the little I have heard he seems to have been a really kind and interesting man with a great passion for this music.

Ivan was a very nice guy. Died way too young from a car accident. He and I traded a couple of bongos, he got me together with Charlie Vega from Isabela PR and I got these bongos. Photo attached. I tried to buy some stuff from his wife after his death, in a way to help out, but was unable to do so. May he rest in peace. "Only the good die young".

There is a YouTube video of Ivan playing a 10 key bongo - maybe this one.

Turkey blocks YouTube at times, sometimes I can get around it, sometimes no. Today no. So I can't post it.

Leedy on the top photo, why did Mathew Smith have to re do the hardware totally, because the top rims nor bottoms, are original, they are made to look like Pan Con Queso, hardware, the ears are of the rim are mathews, style of pan con queso...

did original hardware brake or rust, why would you take away the originality of a pan con queso , work, which is unique?

And on the bottom picture, is that a pan con queso made by the FathePablo Landeta or the son? from what year made is it?

because Pablo Landeta always did his unique ears, to the top rim....as the original pan con quesos aboe.
It looks like something the son might do which is more traditional, hardware, not like his dads.

The bottom bongo, onlly the shell looks original, the top rim is not, the bottom as you said in not...Caly made the bottom..
The top was not made by neither of the Landetas, because it dosnt look like it has welding points, the rivets look very different.

The top rim hardware looks like a Tambores Colombia, or barranquilla, something like El Piernas style of hardware..
Did you get that bongo like that or you switched hardware to another bongo?

And the stained, on the bottom bongo looks really slopy, done in a rush, the middle block looks slopy too., when i zoom on photoshop,
It looks abnormal, honestly. Not like Landetas, professional work, i wonder if he finished that bongo, or someone else?

did you stain the bongo, refurbished it? or just refurbished the hardware?

Landeta was very professional in his work, altough an early maker, shells look like more reacent work also..he's early work bongos were smaller size, like the above ones..I know the son makes bongos here and there, and are bigger such as the bottom slopy bongo.

i Know the father also made congas, we all know he made the best maracas....

Leddy do you have any pictures of Pablo Landetas congas, and different bongos, pictures from venezuela ,or vintage pictures, like the one of veteran timbaleros that you have on your files.

Your one of the knowledgeable persond on Pan Con Queso... so your input, in putting more history of lANDETA senior would be great..
did you ever talk or meet with Pablo, how was he? what did the bongos cost back then?..

To owners of pan con quesos, was your bongo slopy in your opinion, did you guys have to re finish the bongo?...
one of your bongos PQ leedy looks fine, the one in the first picture, by the other member looks professional, looks good, the stain, and the hardware.
some people didnt like LANDETAS WORK, SOME LOVED IT, AT ITS TIME...other makers came along with time.

i wonder if any one could make a time line iwith pictures of percussions,in including the Cuban PIONEERS, BUT also Landeta, and Junior, and Puerto Rican, artesans.

I know there is also some other veteran collectors here, and bongoceros, that could fill in more about pan con queso.
Dario might know some about LANdeta.

I hope you dont take personnally what i wrote abou the bongo, being finished, a slopy way, and how ugly it looks without the original hardware.
I am just noting what i see, and giving my opinion...Landetas work most of the time looked good.

THANX leedy..thanx for the info, of personnally how the man was.

In the first picture you posted, is the first bongo made by Mathew look alike to PAN CON QUESO or he just did the hardware?

in the bottom picture, so the top rim is PQ original, Landetas lp copy.?...
thats cool, i didnt know he did that type of hardware. and is a 4 lug bongo, was it kind of more rare for him to do 4 lug bongos then the 5 lug per drum?

Because is the first one i see PQ with 4, most i have seen are 5 total 10 lugs.

Now i understand you took the bongo as is, because it looked unfinished, not sanded, and slopy stained..like it was finished in a rush.

How many PQ bongos have you own, and which one was your gavorite?

what kind of woods did landeta use?

what kind of wood of the pq's have been like the pic above?

Can you post pics in this tread of all your PQ drums, and also any members owning pan conqueso :D

For some reason i dont think the son looks like Landeta the father, landeta looked more white, and the son looks more moreno ????

Leedy so the bottom picture you posted that pale pq. was made early 60's to 70's? picke up in the 70s by you? or made on the year 1970, so that bongo has to be 41 years old , so nice to look at vintage latin artifacts as this. :D

congabluedog, THANX for sharing your pictures as we can see some more pq's.
is a nice bongo i think, it looks like landeta did finish that one, but made both macho and hembra about the same size, not giving toomuch of a size difference, ,c an you measure them?

when the maker does that, there is not too much tone difference, unless you cranck the macho to high, and have a diiferent head on the hembra. Looks nice though bro..

what do you think about that leedy?

your bottom pq looks like a more bigger size, bothe the macho and the hembra are way too different sizes, one noticeably bigger then the other one as bongos should be made...jus my observation
i think a bongo should be made like that for the two different tones and sizes betwween a small macho, and a bigger hembra.

Here is a photo of a Pan Con Queso bongo' that belonged to Manolito Gonzalez, bongocero for Richie Ray and the PR All Stars. It was mine, now Mario Galagarza has it and had Matt Smith make new hardware for it. Photo of when I got it originally. Second photo, same bongo with Matt Smith's hardware.

Hi RR....Thanks for the compliments on the bongo. I will measure when I get home. I have a collection of vintage bongos and the size differences are very similar btw macho and hembre to this PCQ. I know people often say how great a drum might sound..."THe Best"...etc. but this drum really does sound beautiful...I don't know if it is the heads, the wood, a combo but it has a great pop and just a rich awesome sound. I have to spend more time and adjust the lugs to a position that works though....not fitting me right yet. But the contrast btw the 2 drums sounds fine to me...but I am not an expert by any means.

What do I think of Leedy? I think he has amazing info to offer. I trust what he says about drums...who the makers are etc. He is also a very sweet guy who is more than happy to spend time, give info freely, and help . I have met him once and spent literally hours at his house looking at his collection....hearing the stories about each drum. Anyway...that is my take on it. Jacqui :P
