Old post I know....but this was sweet. Why do those drums sound so good? Technique, miking, drums, acoustics?

Sandy always sounds great! Even when he demonstrates a rhythm at super low volume, his technique shines through. He plays a tone, muff, slap, touch, or bass with infinite grace and it ALWAYS sounds really good - on the crappiest drums. One thing I've noticed over the years of watching him is that he closes off his stroke more than any player I've seen. There must always be some bounce, but with him there's seemingly little to no bounce. His hands smother the drum. Nothing rings out until an occasional open slap roll brings out a roar. A classic lesson in closed hand technique.

my beautiful wife is from Mauritius and I wanted to share with you some vids of traditional mauritian sega. It is played on a frame drum called "ravanne" and a triangle.
I think it's a ternary 6/8 beat. Could someone please confirm?
It's a happy rythm made for dancing, smiling and drinking rhum...

I'd like to add coro to this arrangement... Pedrito is doubling up and doing the coro so that it sounds big enough without 3rd or 4th singer. He's amazing! Since the first time I've seen him play in anything,, he's been my favorite. The guy kills it on percussion... And carries the entire spectrum of song, on top of the percussion! You just can't beat that!
