2) In my opinion I think you are hitting drum with tip of fingers and yes if you are that hurts. A bongo when playing you must dig into it and hit with full fingers, not with tip of fingers or it will hurt you.[/quote]

Cuco, do you know that in any Bongó class the first thing they teach you is the fundamental of the clave, then how the clave interact with the martillo and how to play martillo properly. At least that is the way they teach in La Escuela Libre de musica en Carolina. Quit assuming how other people play. That Galaxy Bongo belong to a friend and he have the same complaing. Also that issue about the LP bearing edge have been post many times before and other people have stated the same.

Bong0 you better off going to that store, that way you see what you buying and could test various models,no later or hidden surprises.

Looks like this cuban guy is using lots of "finger tip". I see lots of cat's play using up to the second joint but when you see the old cuban masters play always lots of finger tip.

Here's what I'm talking about, the modern technique, more volume, but less variation in sound.

Jhair Sala, perfect example of the full hand technique

Sounds annoying to me, no distinction in tone

On the trio that guy plays a bit better than the other guy on video from before.

Not a true bongo player? Cuco are you serious? Good hand placement? Those guys (sala and diz) get one sound out of the macho, the cubans are pulling 3-4. That's how bongo, which as we all know came from Cuba, was designed to be played. Loud salsa bands made the style change. And to say the changui bongoceros play with "no concept" is an insult! That is the concept, exactly what they're doing! Cuba is the cuna of the bongo!

Anyways, to each his own.

Here's pablito rosario teaching one how to play with "los puntitos del dedo" You gonna tell me he don't know how to play bongo?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p0l1nsoPJ1Q

Listen to the variation in sound he's getting from the Macho, now I'm no bongo player , but I am a musician, and I knows a good bongo player when I see one! Pablito is a master!

Right I understand all that, i've spent a lot of time listening to the old players, look at the Pablo Rosario video, tell me he's not playing with fingertip. Diz and Jahir play more modern than pablo, all I'm saying is that the true method of playing bongo uses LOTS of fingertip, that is how those old school players got so many sounds. You say the big guy plays correct, he's only geting one sound out of the macho. As far as my experience with music business goes I come from a long line of musicians, my grandfather played in the house band at the orpheum theater, LA and my uncle arranged for Benny goodman. Not latin music, but music nonetheless, to me it seems like the guys who play today use todo el mano to make more volume, but they don't get good sound, just one sound.

For bongo I listen to the old fania records and of course the poncena records. Again, I really think it's a situation in which the music determines how you need to play. If you play in a conjunto with acoustic guitar, bajo etc. you cant keep banging th bongos like those guys with the full hand, sounds nasty. if you play in a big salsa band maybe it's better to play like that. Like you said, you play loud, so maybe you can't play with your fingers becaue you hit too hard, doesn't mean someone else can't like I said Pablo knows what he's doing. As far as history I've been around music my whole life, I never got into latin music until I saw Armando and Orestes with Santana in 84 in my hometown SF, but I heard a lot and played alot and I know good musicianship when I see it. Just because you don't play with your fingers becaue you hit hard doesn't mean someone else can't OR that it's the only way to play. Con mucho respecto cuco.
