Reheading Production Congas

Postby Marcus » Wed Jan 11, 2012 3:32 pm

Hey People,

I have production congas. They are not heavy or overbuilt. Hardware is strong and has been proven over the years with standard lug size. The heads are cow and not WB, yet I kinda think that the heads are not the ultimate quality which is understandable in a production conga to keep cost reasonable. The skins are very ruff seeming a bit pourous.

I want to rehead eventually and considering mule for the Qunito and high quality rawhide for the Conga and Tumba. Any thoughts on possible mismatch or overstressing the shell and hardware. Really do not want to get into the issue of detuning between playing sessions. Kinda breaks the inspiration of just sitting down and playing at will.

Summer time project but now just starting to think about it.

peace, Marcus

Okay, they are the new Gonbops Mariano Series congas. Skins are about medium thick on the C and T. The Qunito head is a bit less thick.

Don't ge me wrong. I am not disappointed with my new Gonbops--I am very happy, nearily gitty about my congas. I am just a custom guy living in an "off the rack" world and I always look to see if a few modifications would provide superior results. I will send some pic to L&H when I get the time and am ready for the project.

thx, Mark
