1950's VERGARA tumbadora, Incredible find.

Postby Omelenko1 » Sat Feb 04, 2012 1:06 pm

I just got this 1950's Gonzalo Vergara 10.75" macho. Is in excellent condition for a 50+ years drum. I first saw it and knew about it about 15 years ago, but finally the day came yesterday when I was able to get it. All I have to do is put a new thin cowhide on it. I still can't believe it, to find something like this and in such condition in year 2012. The drum was hardly ever played. The same person also has a Requena from the era that I'll probably get as well. This is the exact same macho that Mongo played for over 45 yrs. Enjoy the photo of historic Cuban percussion at its highest.

The blue glitter LPs are somewhere in Puerto Rico these days, I sold them to a guy there. Do you still have your glitters Mike?

great looking piece of equipment man - I gotta ask - how much did it set you back? I always wonder the market is for these old school gems.

About 15 yrs. ago, the guy was asking $600 for it, I thought it was too much so I didn't act on it. He has a store he calls the Cuban Museum, with all kinds of Cuban collectible items. He's is getting very old and in poor health and he was having a clearence type of sale. I stopped by and to my surprise, the Vergara that I saw 15 yrs. ago was still there. I was abel to get it at a much better price. He also has a Candido Requena quinto from the 50's that my friend is getting and some bongos, both Requena and SONOCS.

Nice, beautiful drum I have one that I got during the summer but have not had the time to take to have renovated yet, I hope it turns out as nice as yours Bro. One thing I notice is the handle looks bigger than usual or is it my perception?

BEAUTIFULL DRUM!

is the handle one solid piece of metal all the way , or is it like some conga handles that are bent but are hollow inside, if you look at the inside of the handle>?

Abakua,

Stop by El Parque Tulipan in "El Cerro" . At the Solar across from the park, is where the rumba seed in me was planted over 50 yrs. ago. Enjoy my city of birth y las ricas sandungueras mulatonas!
