First i used to have 2 Meinl marathon bongo's witch i liked verry much .
But the reason for saying that was a joke to mike that i wanted to trade his raul bongo (Witch is really verry verry verry nice see link below ) for a meinl marathon ,I could have said as as well that i would trade him a LP gen 3 bongo's ! And he still wouldn't trade his Raul bongo's

Hi Skinslapper,
i understood the point perfectly.
I was being whimsical, feigning sadness, at your joking commentary to Mike at the expense of Meinl Bongos. I simply used it as a point of departure into posting the modifications to my Bongos that I had written about months ago and recently got around to doing. ... i think some one here posted a question a while back regarding making center blocks themselves.?

@Caballoballo: Of course the opinions of others regarding any brand of Instrument wouldn't bother me. It's all so subjective any way. Interesting though; over the months, I've gotten to know a couple of local drum makers who have both strongly expressed that, the type of wood used is purely an aesthetic and structural preference and has very little or no effect on the quality of sound from the drum, and that it's the Skins that give each drum its sound character. I can't say if that's true or not, I'm not a drum maker and have'nt played enough different set ups to make an informed opinion on the subject, but after close to twenty years of making different kinds of drums; I'm inclined to assume they know what they're talking about. And, I must say that, the new Cowhides on my Bongos made from rubber wood have certainly made positive a change in the drums sound quality compared to the factory Water Buffallo skins.
I hope the storm passes with out too much harm done!

My "Workhorse". Great Meinl. Bought it for about $35 at a pawnshop in Germany in 1981. Cast bottoms!! Sounds as good as any of my $500 boutique or vintage bongos. Cow hembra has been on for years. Change the goat macho often. Carry a spare nuskin in the bag. Some don't leave the house but this one is always ready to go.

Psych1,
That's a beautiful set and what a steal on the price! Those cast bottoms are actually not as bulky looking as some others I've seen in the past. They are nicely streamlined and I wouldn't mind the extra width of the bottom crowns as they appear. They are quite impressive and have a nice simple yet classy appearance. Enjoy them always in your gigging & travels. Peace...

Jorge.

I have had 4 or 5 high end bongos come into my hands and end up letting them go on to someone else to enjoy, but my Meinls always remaIn with me and they also go out with me to the drum jams. They take a beating, and don't even flinch. Plus these I have ( I also have a red fiberglass set on standby in a case ) being fiberglass are just like having solid shells, and they sound great. I prefer these to LP fiberglass because the LP's seem to have a very light chrome on them and they tend to peel especially on the bottoms.
