Yes, the Puentes brothers are still in the area, but they rarely perform locally. Something I completely understand, Victoria is rather isolated being on the island and "exposure kills" in our tiny music scene. Alex now goes by "Alex Cuba", last time I saw him perform he had a massive fro and wore tight baby blue 70's pants
Quite the look! He performed with only a percussionist, Jose Sanchez, who lives on Saltspring Island. I've met with Jose for a few lessons etc. After training on the congas with a folkloric rumbero, Jose really helped me tie the music to my western music training/writing - he was formally trained at a music school in Cuba. Unfortunately for me, good for him, he's often on tour and difficult to connect with for more training.
