Please recommend latin jazz listening for conga - Where congas are easy to hear

If you don't find a specific forum, post your message here (please read all the forum list first).

Hello wonderful congaplace gang, if you would be so kind, please recommend some listening material, I would like to restrict the list with following rules though:

1. It should be Latin Jazz style with congas in the arrangement
2. Congas need to be easily heard like here:
A Night in Tunisia
3. Please keep it to up to 3 top ones on your list that fit above criteria

Big part of learning music and specialy Latin music is listening, but with so much out there it's hard to pick.
I am taking Latin Jazz workshop class and Conga lessons in our local music school, and want to listen to more music. I got that Latino album by the way and definitely learning from it.

Thanks all...

well you've starting out good...Latino by Cal Tjader w/ Mongo and Willie is a must...

1. Descargas Cubanas - Marcelino Valdez and Tata Guines on congas
2. Cesta/Alegre Allstars- Frankie Malabe on Congas
3. Jerry Gonzalez and the Fort Apache Band (any album)

I just bought a double disc set called "More than Mambo" The introduction to Afro Cuban Jazz (Verve records) -Lots of Cal Tjader, Patato Valdez, Eddie Palmieri etc... I also like Poncho Sanchez alot...then again he learned everything from Tjader....

Sakuntu,

Album: Mi Tambor, Paoli Mejias, on of the true current greats rivaling Gio. As a learning tool and play-along-with, it's way beyond basic, but it's definitely worth having as a pinnacle for reference.

Hello Fed

I would recommend Cal Tjader's
Ritmos Calients
and Mas Ritmos Calients.
Not sure of the spelling, it's a double album set with some of the latin jazz greats including Mongo

Its really worth a listen, google Cal Tjader maybe you can hear some samples of it.

I just got a couple of old school CD's by Grupo Folklorico y Experimental Nuevayorquino. These were recorded in the early 70's and sound really good. It is some great musicians, Chocolate Armenteros, Manny Oquendo, Julito Collazo, Andy Gonzalez, and Jerry Gonzalez among others. More Latin than jazz but really good. I would check out one of their CD's "Lo Dice Todo" if you are interested. Other than that you cannot go wrong with Mongo Santamaria or Ray Barretto. I think especially a live Ray Barretto CD, it really captures the excitement and energy that he created.

Mongo should be your no. 1 source.Just like JC, I got them all.Get as much Tjader as you can, also R. Barretto and if you want strong "afinque and mazacote" get the early Eddie Palmieri with Tommy Lopez on conga all on the Allegre label.
After that, to put the frosting on the cake, get Villa Hidalgo by Giovanni.
Saludos, Dario. :D

My spiritual father and I. VIVA MONGO !

Hello everybody!
In your list I haven't seen Francisco Aguabella, his the fist who came to my mind. All of them are great!
Poncho Sanchez is realy cool, check any record, I don't have just few, I guess.
I'm so jealous about Mongo, unfortunatly I got only about 30 records of him, sure I have to get all.
Check the Ralth Irizarry & Timbalaye with Roberto Quintero on congas, on my opinion it's one the most progressive latin jazz at this moment.
All the Best!
