Just caught the first performance of AfroCuba de Matanzas here in SF. Organized by our very own blango from this board, also known as Tony.

A wonderful performance, very intimate, small venue. It was kicked of with a great conga solo by Sandy Perez. The performance continued with singing, guanguanco dancing, a song done on the bata, and much more. There was plenty of interaction between audience and performers, a nice little shekere solo at the end. El Grupo came back on for 2 encores.

Really just a great great show, I have no doubt the second show in Berkely will be just as good, everyone that can go should go.

A big thanks and conradulations to blango/Tony. I had a few seconds with him before the show, and this was his first promotion. Very well done, my man! I hope the success of this event encourages you to bring more acts of this superb quality and calibre to our little corner of the world. I for one greatly appreciate it.

Wow,

Dear Obatala!

That was fun!

Thanks for the kind words Bombs. I feel blessed.

Sandy is such an amazing player, and such a warm person.

I cant express how happy I am to help him contribute to this tradition.

A big thanks to the board members who helped get the word out, much praise.

La Pena should be really cool show tonight, thats his home venue. 8pm 3105 Shattuck in Berkeley.

The sets will be switched around, so the invento with the bass and piano will be at the end. Im going to see if we can pull the chairs for the second set so Coto can work the montunos till the floor is spinning!

Hope you all can make it tonight, its truly something special. There is also a rumba at la pena that starts at 3:30 today, and all the heavies should be out to play.

Those pictures are great, that must have been an amazing show. So many really talented people, drummers, singers, and dancers. And Sandy told me his son could play all 3 parts of the entire oru seco before he turned 6! Looks like he can dance too. Talk about passing the culture on to the next generation, that is a perfect example of how it works. Blango, congratulations for helping the whole thing to happen, and for everyone involved, les deseo mucho aché, que sigan pa'lante.

The best live performances photo coverage I've ever seen! I could feel the music and the incredibly exciting vibe between musicians, audience and photographer. Congratulations.

I am so happy how this all turned out.

We are working on a series of shows in January. And possibly a west coast tour following the workshops next year.

I'll keep you posted!

Tony,

Congratulations on the show. The pics speak volumes. You are truly the Barnum Bailey of the S F rumba scene. Sorry to have missed it.

The costumes are marvelous! The red cajon is really interesting looking!!
