I wish Onile would post, he is the only guy here I know that has one...

says Fats are his best sounding drums

Sound is most important for sure, but build quality is also very important. Who wants to pay for a great sounding conga that falls apart in a year or so?

Some drums I've heard start to sound better as they age, so you would want it to last that long.

Alafia Abures!
I hope that you are all well and abundantly blessed!

As for the construction of the Fats, I must say that they are built to last. Aside from having used some of the strongest epoxy to hold the staves together, there is what is what is called biscuit joinery used between each stave also. As I was waiting for my set to be completed (approx. 3yrs from time of order), I was contacting Rick Buschemi on a regular basis and he was sharing the construction portion of the drums with me. He explained that there are little slats placed in between the staves that are glued in like dowels only instead of long and round, they are flat and oval. This feature strengthens the joints between each stave.

As for sound, yes I conceed, it's a question of personal preference, however there has never been uttered the words of "they sound like crap", or "I don't like how they sound" from any other percussionist whom I've allowed to play them.
"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" (sorry, I don't know the orginator of the quote to site 'em) is probably the most appropriate statement here. The sound is another thing however, what with all of the amplification used these days.

Many blessings my brothers and sisters!

Respectfully,

Onile

So I guess they ended up going for $2,075. That is the only set of Fat Congas I have ever seen on ebay so I am sure there was a ton of people watching them. I could not bid that much on them but I am sure whoever did is very happy with their purchase. Like we have all been saying, it is personal preference if you think they are worth it then they are.

at any rate they are a highly collectable conga, rare and hard to get, collecting congas is as valid a hobby as anything else, I'm sure most collectors actually play as well, and if they don't so what..

if whoever bought doesn't like them I am sure they can easily be resold for about the same price..

Funny thing is, I think they sold for about what they went for new.

Funny that you mention they went for what they were sold for new because I was thinking the same thing. Someday they will be worth more used than they were brand new. Since they are no longer in production there are not many around and they are highly sought after and collectible. Hopefully whoever bought them is a player. I have never even heard Fat Congas somebody should record them and post it here or on You tube

I think our own "Congalero" was the one that bought them and he collects all kinds of congas, mostly old Valjes (Tom Flores).

Saludos,
Dario :D

That would be great if Congalero got them, he's a cool guy. I hope I can meet him someday, I know he is in S.F. same as me.
