WHEN IT COMES TO CONGAS I HAVE 4 DRUMS. MY ISLA TUMBA, ISLA REQUINTO, AND MY ORIGINAL 11 YEAR OLD MATADORS QUINTO AND CONGA. I'M ALSO HAVING AN (ISLA-CONGA) BEING MADE FOR ME AS THIS IS BEING WRITTEN. SO SOON IT'LL BE THREE. MY GOAL IS A SET OF 5. :D

IF YOU'LL GO MYCONGAPLACE AND DOUBLE CLICK ON "ELCOQUI" YOU'LL SEE ME WITH MY ISLA'S. :;):

Guys Charlie is right I listened to him and made the plunge and there is just no comparison you cannot believe the difference i played side by side with LP's and there is a world of difference. And the better i get the more i see the differences. After playing these drums i would not consider buying anything else unless it was a Junior Tirado set or something. The only way i'm buying anything else would be to have a set to take to the park so i can avoid damage to my Isla's thats it.

All,

I'm taking the first steps...... I've emailed Mario at Isla to find out about shipping to England. Then, I will see if I can bring myself to ebay the Gio's. I'm going to sleep on it and go with my gut feeling.

Thanks for all the great advice guys.

IMHO and YMMV,
I have a set of Isla's and LP classics, and LP Valje. I use each set for a purpose.
Your Gios can still have professional use along with Isla, if you decide to get a set.

If you need to subsidise the value of the Gio's to purchase the Isla, that is of course up to you. Whichever way you decide, just remember you are going blind. Especially if money is a concern, I would suggest getting a demo first but being in DE may be hard for any esoteric congas.

Call Mario and get the DVD. What I will say is that recorded drums sound somewhat different than in person, and the rooms acoustical properties they are being played in have a big effect.

Isla's are great drums for certain, and they sound great, I have seen some with problems though, not bagging on the Isla's, LP's sometimes have problems too.

Your basically talking about the cost and trouble of adding one Lp Galaxy requinto to match your set, vs. replacing your current drums for a set you have never seen or heard before which need to be shipped over sea's and require you to sell your current drums on ebay, drums which you seem to be happy with?

Seems like a lot of work for one measly little requinto ?!?

Buy the requinto and be happy with a great set of drums, I've heard the galaxy quinto, it's sounds fine, can't imagine the requinto to be any different.

The reason I'm considering the switch is because of the great endorsements I keep reading on this board from those who actually own the Isla's. I'm still up in the air as to whether or not I'll first attempt a muleskin swap on the LP Gio's before I sell the Gio's (I just would like better sound from these things). But I may have to sell my Gio's in order to raise some of the $ for the Isla's... otherwise, I'd probably keep both sets. I'm not able to make that decision yet.

Fortunately for me, Isla is within driving distance and I'd probably take me Gio's over there to compare before making the plunge.

As for shipping conga's to England--- you have two big concerns...
1) Cost (and I'll bet this will be incredibly expensive)
2) Possible damage in transit.

If you are able to justify it, perhaps you could take a cruise ship vacation to Los Angeles and apply the several hundred that the shipping WOULD have cost to the cost of your cruise. I mention this as a possible option to check into, because you might be talking a LOT of money for shipping which can be considered a discount on your cruise (and there are bargain cruise tickets out there). If you will be able to quickly run into the city to pick up your drums (or have Isla bring them to the dock for a small fee), and bring them onto the ship, and into your stateroom, then perhaps you can avoid possible damage in transit as well. Just a thought, something to check into.

It's strange to think we are in the same boat here Whopbamboom, excuse the pun. Yeah the cruise sounds good, but I'm waiting to find out the shipping costs before I ebay my gear and I wont be making any rash decisions just yet.

The problem I have is the ringing sound I get from my Gio's.

Would new skins sort this problem out? I would have thought this is the cheaper option!

Confused conguero.......

Conguero,

Others on this forum have said that the Gio's "become a different drum" when muleskin is mounted. From what I gather, the ringing goes away and they sound pretty good. Do a forum search for the folks that have offered up this input from personal experience and ask them directly what they think of the skin swap. I'm still considering that, and may very well do it, but it will probably cost me a good $250 to aquire three mule skins for my three Gio drums. I am currently saving for another car (new baby due in April), and so I have to put most of my new equipment purchases off until after we get the car.

A note on mules. I bought 3 from Isaac at Funky Trad. Absolutely fantastic skins, superb service. Wouldn't play anything else. I've got them on utilitarian LP Ardiente's (don't laugh, all I could afford at the time) and have found the mulies very, very sensitive to proper tuning. Just an eighth to quarter inch lug nut turn can make the difference between a bit of ring and a clean open with contrasting, cracking slaps. The sweet spot is there. You've got to find it precisely.

Conguero perhaps you could try a swap on only 1 skin and if that doesn't give you what you are looking for then it was only one skin as opposed to a whole set.

Congeuo,
I looked into the isla`s good price shipping was reasonablle to the uk , my only concern is the ripp off coustomsimport charge you would be getting . Im still considering the islas they are well made and sound amazing i got the new dvd great stuff. I recently re skinned one of my meinl classics the conga its been on 3 weeks now and it has totaly transformed my conga when i play with other 2 11 and 12 1/2 they sound flat compared to the thai thin buffalo skin the factory fitted .
im sure if you went this way you would be just as pleased .
Im kind of waiting for someone on here from the uk to take the plunge first on the islas to see how much over all cost would be . they are very sexy drums though and id like to be part of what is sure to be a legend in the future isla . mario is very good with comms .

vaya
