Well, what we know is that the yellow drum came with an old painted-over eye bolt at the top and a matching hole in-line at the bottom, which implies a tackhead (they used to often wear them across the shoulders with a strap). And there are no normally positioned holes in the shell for side plates. That hardware is really heavy and bulky (though the shell much thinner than a modern conga, and not heavy) - there's no way this drum, with the hardware, would ever be played carrried with a top-to-bottom strap. There's way too much paint to see evidence of any old holes that might have been used for tacks, though. So we don't know for sure, but the evidence points to reconfigured tackhead.
