I thought we decided it was originally built that way?

Xavier Cugat thought they were cool enough to put on his album...

Well, what we know is that the yellow drum came with an old painted-over eye bolt at the top and a matching hole in-line at the bottom, which implies a tackhead (they used to often wear them across the shoulders with a strap). And there are no normally positioned holes in the shell for side plates. That hardware is really heavy and bulky (though the shell much thinner than a modern conga, and not heavy) - there's no way this drum, with the hardware, would ever be played carrried with a top-to-bottom strap. There's way too much paint to see evidence of any old holes that might have been used for tacks, though. So we don't know for sure, but the evidence points to reconfigured tackhead.

Yeah if only these drums could tell the stories of what they have been through.

Yea, thats right bombs, thanks for the reminder.

That one was one of the first with metal tunable hardware.

First generation of metal hardware, a design that didnt fly!!

Its cool, as james has a set of Bongo from Cuba with some of the first hardware made for bongo.
