....so then you have to consider this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R2sAnrJCjaE&NR=1
Is not so much the bow and the arrow but the Indian skills what is most important.

The bongos in the first video have a much much better sound. I listened to that one all the way through.
The drums in the second video sound bad, even with Anthony Carillo's masterful playing.

I agree, the first set of bongos has a much bette sound in my opinion. Carrillo definitely can get a good sound out of probably anything, but you can't deny that there is a difference in sound between the two sets of drums.

The bongos he is playing between his legs sounds real good, the other one he is using for effects and contrast is not properly tuned.

One more with what for some are subpar drums http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvkzZiwl ... re=related

The high end LP's kind of ring a bit but the low end Aspires don't ring as much and sound a bit better than the Gios IMHO in this video.

The little Aspire looks like it has an aftermarket skin, but it is probably the best sounding drum there. The other Aspire sounds flat and the Giovanni's are ringy.

IMHO the mass produce professional congas like LP, Pearl, Meinl are made/design to sound real loud as for cutting through in loud bands live events and with more volume you get the ringing deal, for studio recordings they probably have to be toned down a bit.

But anyway back to bongo skins and suggestions. One of the combinations I like is fiberskyn on the macho and medium thickness mule or cow/calf/steer/bull on the hembra. IMHO plastic on the hembras can get tricky specially with the new tucked fiberskyn, they ring a bit too. The other day I went to guitar center and inquire about the price of LP Water Buffalo Bongo heads for the pair of hembra and macho they wanted almost $87.00. Way too expensive for way less than that I can get me a nice set of mule or cow from L&H.

Remo Skyndeep on both drums. No ring, nice overtones, and a pleasure to play. And you dont need anything more fancy than Matadors. Mine sound better than any of the bongos on the videos here.

I think I'm going to go ahead and try the remo macho, mule hembra combo. Sounds like a winning combo to me!

This is a good time for me to post this; I scored the GB Cali bongos that were listed here. I got a great deal due to the ripped horsehide macho. Consensus of opinion seems to be that the horse head sounds great. GonBops sells them tucked for 72.00. I have a nice BC on my Meinl macho that I think will fit. I don't like mule and don't know where to get kip. I'm also thinking about a tucked FibreSkin or NuSkin. I'm not a great bongo player so, I'm looking for easy slaps and piercing tones. Any opinions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Buckoh

I got me a nice big horse hide round earlier this year. Here soon I may use it to mount a bongo macho head and see how it sounds. The only thing is that is a big round big enough to mount a tumba head and by using it for a bongo macho head I will be wasting a good chunk of horse hide.

Sorry Buckoh that was not my intention. Hopefully this evening I will post a link to the place where I got the horsehide from. Last time I check last week they had some horse hide rounds available.
