IMHO the mass produce professional congas like LP, Pearl, Meinl are made/design to sound real loud as for cutting through in loud bands live events and with more volume you get the ringing deal, for studio recordings they probably have to be toned down a bit.
But anyway back to bongo skins and suggestions. One of the combinations I like is fiberskyn on the macho and medium thickness mule or cow/calf/steer/bull on the hembra. IMHO plastic on the hembras can get tricky specially with the new tucked fiberskyn, they ring a bit too. The other day I went to guitar center and inquire about the price of LP Water Buffalo Bongo heads for the pair of hembra and macho they wanted almost $87.00. Way too expensive for way less than that I can get me a nice set of mule or cow from L&H.
