Buying drums for the skins on them is like buying a car for the tires. Plenty of makers use steer hide, indeed it seems that only the major mass producers (LP, Toca, etc) use anything but steer hide. Skins last for years ... true. It is convenient to find your favored skin on a drum as you consider buying the drum so as to avoid the cost of new skins ($35-$75 per skin) ... true. But, I recommend against setting choice of skin as a major consideration in choosing drums.
