BNB said it in the least (but best) words: "Why is it always the conguero that has to play the clown?" Thanks, and end of discussion! Buck

Wow, that sounds like a musical director who has his priorities wrong. Not being a pro-musician I wonder is that the norm in the industry or an anomaly?

The majority of the public, non percussionist and even some percussionist do not know about drums like Junior's, M.Smith, SOS ect.. I also play in wedding bands very commercial but its great money, again they tell me my beautiful Oak Gon Bops are ok for rehersal but prefer the flash of comercial drums on stage.Rey Arroyo Jr.

I can understand this attitude. I can see how some directors or bands might want something new, clean and shiny on stage versus "vintage" and with "character". That is why I have drums that go outside to parks and beaches and others that go onstage.

Pont is band director = boss, thry pay you, if don't like what they're asking you to do try to convince them otherwise, if you can't and you think it's too much of a compromise to your artistic integrity don't do the gig!

Actually, you're missing the point. But I'll clear it up for you. You only assume congueros are the clown because of decorated congas but that is because you and others like yourself think decorations are clown like. No one else really cares. It's all in your head. So if you have coloured congas and YOU think you're a clown, than you probably are. But the rest don't really care. You are playing the clown because you think you are...But that thought doesn't cross anyone else's mind.

You really have a strange patronising way of making a point

Personally I have a rider sheet requesting what I want backlined on stage and for congas i request Lp Classics , because i know from experience that's usually the drum they will have and in most cases is the natural blond classics.

Peace

I'm just gonna say it.
You guys are picking on the new guy.
I noticed all along that his avatar photo shows a natural colored drum.
I haven't thought Oladipo at any point in this discussion was vehemently defending his own choice in drum decor.
I've thought all along that he was promoting tolerance toward other people's choices, and that his position, despite his wise-ass demeanor that matched others in the discussion, was far more altruistic and philosophical than some here have recognized.
He's been no more cheeky than others ... and quite frankly ... he didn't cross the line into senseless homophobia did he?
I'm just calling it like I see it.

Cheers,

Seems to be 3 distinctions in the conversation (taste aside).

The mass produced drums with the freaky deeky paint jobs (kinda like going to the car lot and picking the colour and pinstrip you like).

Having an artist do something specifically for your taste on your drums (taking your car to the auto paint shop and having a bare breasted viking chick air brushed on the hood).

And then there is folk art (painting sunflowers and peace signs on your hippy-dippy VW van).

Below is my VW van drum. I promise you I DO NOT keep it because of its sound!!! But some dude (or dudet) with some art in their soul spent some serious time on this ...and it makes me happy to look at it.

I want a bare breasted viking chick air brushed on my hood, I think that would be cool!

Very cool indeed simply because it is your personal art, not some mass produced generic blah. I think the bare breasted viking will cock block you ultimately, unless you are playing inside the the Full Throttle Saloon.
