Cheers for the reply Jorge . A very interesting situation exists in New York for sure .I imagine its the same in most countries in europe also , i know in Ireland noise laws etc are very vague and the cops themselves dont know the law  Would love to come and see the central pk rumba next time im in that part of the world .

Before you all start feeling sorry for us in NYC, check out some of the videos of the Cental Park rumba. I just got home from the Central Park rumba today, it was probably the last warm Sunday of the season and lots of people went. Great rumba today, one of the best all year. No video yet from today's rumba, but here are a couple of clips from a couple of months ago to give you an idea, although today's rumba was a lot better.

Most of these same guys were there today, plus lots more. Giuliani time is over (for now), and the rumba is back in full force. La rumba no se va morir.

Abakua, you are very privileged to get a chance to go to Cuba for 2 months! I wish I could go, but it is just not possible with my job and the current political situation. I know you are going to have a great time and learn a whole lot just by being there. Ache pa ti.

Gracias bro, Ache pa ti as well. 2 months for now, might be looking at staying alot longer, will see how things pan out during our stay there.

Great to see Central Park rumba in full force still. 8) Tell me, by any chance did you meet Cindy, asian looking girl, living here in Sydney, she was over there for a few months a few weeks back, she spent fair bit of time over in Central Park. She plays percussion with DJ's and funk acts locally.

I honed my quinto chops at the CP Rumba Wars...I played up to 12 hours sometimes and would go home and piss blood from all that playing and would feel GREAT! AND STRONG!...the Rumba in the park has been a mainstay for over 50 years and i was 15 16 years old, 45 years ago when I started to jam there....it is a New York tradition...it is a Tourist attraction...it brings people together...it is a release of the stress of living in the city....it is a form of communication and bonding....it is a learning center for the community of drummers and singers...it is a way to meet and make friends....there is a "stigma" against the drum that still exists, by people who are "afraid' and "unnerved" by what they hear and cant understand....it behooves them to join the human family and understand WE AINT GOING ANYWHERE!....WE'RE HERE TO STAY!....SO GET OVER IT!....now here is a sample of the beauty of Rumba in the park, plain and simple, no frills...what's there to be 'afraid' of?...

All the video of Central Park rumbas I've watched have been of guanguanco and a couple of columbia,s - maybe. How often were other rhythms played. With all the Peurto Ricans in New York was bomba and plena played? Are thier today more than this one rumba in the park? What about back in the day. JohnnyC has talked about different rumbas in the various Burroughs I believe, but what about the park itself. I think I've seen video of Hatians drumming, and a djembe drum circle in the park - present day. Is that how it has always been - different groups playing in different parts of the park? I really enjoy reading the accounts of you guy's experiences in N.Y.. I kind of miss 'Doctor Z' in that regard in terms of the history in Cuba. Whether it all was true or not, it was always interesting and entertaining reading.

Good questions, QG. The Central Park Cuban rumba is just that, Cubans and a few Dominicans, Puerto Ricans and others playing rumba and only rumba. Strictly guaguanco, guarapachangeo, occasional abakua, old style columbias and conga de comparsa. Lots of santo lyrics in the rumbas, but only rare guiro or bembe drumming. No batas. Almost no one knows how to play a modern columbia. In fact, don't try to start a yambu, a slow modern columbia or a guaguanco Matancero (or anything slow!), you will get kicked out immediately. Even so, some of the drummers are so good it never gets boring even with such strict limitations on what we play. Some days, we could use some better singers, but sometimes they are great too. The Haitians play in a different part of the park. The bomba/plena crowd plays elsewhere also, even though some of our group play with top bomba/plena groups and know Puerto Rican folk music really well.

When i say the "Rumba wars" of Central park at times it did seem like that because there were different drummers in all different parts of the park....yea there were jimbe drummers back then and african drumming, haitian drumming, but cats came from all boroughs to play with the cats they knew and like playing with...in those days you couldnt just walk up with your drum and sit down and play with cats...they would tell u where to go first-like get the f outa here...so different groups of drummers would find their own spots around the park and meet accordingly...there were even guys that would sit with there own drum by them selves and not want to play with anyone else...I imagine it hasn't changed that much since i was there in the 60's and early 70's...

well beside all that chek out this video with Gio and Paoli and get ur blood going!...

Gio and Paoli kicking butt and taking names. I am digging the drums Gio and Paoli played on this video. Gio played LP's with stock heads and Paoli LP's with plastic heads. They sound great. I read that LP is coming out with a Prestige Giovanni Hidalgo signature timbal in the future.

That is the Bomb. I recognize the recording studio, it's the same one used when they filmed Buena Vista Social Club.
