Thank you to the people who explained about floating hardware.

So, im thinking that a traditional rope tuned/tensioned drum would be considered to be of the floating hardware family?

Interesting point regarding rope tuning. This would not be hardware but it would be floating in a sense in relation to the shell. This would allow the shell to be more resonant but the head is the primary resonant member of the drum. Hardware is so much more versitile than rope tuning but this is an opinion and personal taste item. If you prefeer rope tuning then have at it!

It is all good.

Ive got a couple of rope tuned Djembes. Ive never messed with them. They seem to stay pretty tight and the tone doesnt suffer too badly due to the winter/summer atmospheric conditions. But none the less, i agree, the mechanical tuned drums are much easier to deal with.

I wonder if this going to be a problem in the future. As the rim wil shift a bit to one side, in time, i presume .

I am also thinking of replacing the rims with soft curve rims from LP .

Hey, skinslapper! I'm glad you like the sound of your Bauer's!

But on the subject of rims - I like the classic rims on the Bauer's. In fact that was one of the reasons I chose the Vintage series over Classic. The distance of rim to the body of drum is something that varies from manufacturer to manufacturer, and also depends on body style. I think because of the fat belly that Bauer's have they had to place the rim that way. And it's good, because the rim is out of your hands way when you play and so lessens your chance of hurting your hands. Plus the skins are easier to change with trad rims (although Bauers come with good unbleached skins that should last long).

I don't think the soft curve rim distributes the tension much better than traditional rim. It depends on number of mounting points and the thickness of either rim, and Bauer rims are thick enough. And If you are tuning the drum with equal number of turns at each lug then the rim should not shift sideways.

To check the eveness of the tension and tuning, dampen the center of the drum and tap with the tuning wrench lightly on the skin near each tuning lug. Normally the tone will not be consistent. First do a rough tuning and fine tune the head with the dampening and tapping method. When the head is tuned and the tapping at each lug is consistently the same, you should find the head to have better resonance and less overtones.

This method should keep the head from slipping to one side too and also have better tone.

Enjoy your new drums.

@ Jerry Thanx but what do you mean by "dampening" ?

I also fixed the crack that started under the lugplate .
A strange crack as it seemed to be only on the surface .
I didn't see the crack inside .
I scraped the gleu out filled the crack with ceder wood strips and p u gleu .
After it dryed i sanded it down ,brushed the dust out and filled the tiny holes with supergleu .
Sanded down again ,and then a few layers of varnish . And then polished it .

(Korman i'll mail you some pictures )Sorry i don't know how to put pictures on the forem .

I reccomend using 2 part epoxy for a repair like the one you described. Volcano uses epoxy like this for their congas.

The tuning method I am describing is much like what most drum set players use for tuning thier Toms and Snare.

You first get a rough tuning that is favorable to your taste and I normally do this with equal turns on each lug.

Then I put my hand thumb to 4 fingers depending on the size of the head (smaller less fingers and larger more fingers).

I tap lightly on the head with my tuning wrench near each lug with the head dampened by my other hand. (Normally there will be a difference between some of the lugs on the skin) I tune the lugs to get the tapping tone to match each other. Afterwards, I final tune with equal aditonal tightening or loostening full or partial turns. I repeat this testing with taping on the dampened head until the tuning at the lugs match and the final tuning of the head has a tone that is pleasing.

Regards.

I don't agree(If the epoxy has a different color as the wood ) the way i did it dous not show there's been a fix . It looks verry natural çause i've used cedar wood .
It looks like a wood grain .

I am also fixing an old bata . The wood was painted black but in a bad state . After sanding down i discoverd a lot of filler .
By filling the holes ( after i scraped the filler out) with layer's of super gleu and lots of sanding you don't see much of the super gleu .
It takes on the color of wood .
Looks nice actually . I now have to varnish it . But my Bauers go first for know !!!

Two arguments these 2 day's one with my girlfriend ;much to late for dinner .
One with the guy whom plays after me in the rehearselroom .I overstayed .
On both accounts my fault .

But o i love those Bauers . There getting slowly in tune know .
And those skins the feel so soft .
By far the clearest tumbao i've ever had .
Loud and crisp slaps out of the tumbao and great bass.
And the conga to what a sound .
Best buy ever !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It was hard for me to leave them in the R room .
Tomorrow after work i'l go back for a few houers

I've noticed that the rim of the bauer conga (and my raul) is higher on the outside of the tub and slopes inwards .
All my other conga's are the other way arround .
My hands had to get used to this .
Actually its the skin on my thumbs thats gotten a bit raw.
A slightly other angle causes this i think .
And i don't like the (hanging)stand . the space between the congá is to big for my liking
I"ll get tripod stands (basket i think the are called ).

But i love'm though!!!!!!!1

My bauer tumbao cracked .
As i expected it would one day !

The crack is not through the wood .
Its about 2mm deep
Also it cracked under the lug plate . As was the conga crack .
Filled it up again with little chips of ceder wood and pu gleu .

No problem it still sounds superb !
It only has a scarr now.

Again 2 cracks under the lugplates, starting at the bottom hole . The don't crack fully through the wood . I don't understand these cracks !!!
But they don't afect the sound so i"ll keep filling and don't bother to much !

Wow Skinlapper. I’m sorry to hear about your dilemma. Hopefully this is the last crack.
Do you think you might consider selling them?
